Pop in to Paris on your lunch break

The Melbourne CBD is famed for many distinct precincts – each with its own unique character and identity. Take a stroll to the leafy eastern end of Collins Street and you’ll be transported to another city reminiscent of Europe. The ‘Paris’ end of Collins Street – as it’s known to the locals, features grand 19th Century architecture, luxury boutiques and European inspired eateries. The area was home to the artistic community, with many artists, musicians, writers, photographers and theatre performers living and working in this end of the city.

Here are our favourite reasons to explore this refined end of Collins Street:

Great shopping

If you love luxury designer brands then look no further. You’ll find flagship stores for Chanel, Fendi, Versace, Burberry, Giorgio Armani, Hermes, Gucci, Harrolds, Dior, Bottega Veneta and Louis Vuitton here, along with Bvlgari, George Jensen, Cartier and Tiffany & Co. for all your jewellery needs.

Beautiful architecture

As you walk along the street, look up! You’ll be surprised at the stunning architecture above eye level. Visit the Block Arcade for an example of 19th century design in the form of a shopping arcade featuring mosaic tiled floors, a glass domed roof and carved stone. There’s the Manchester Unity Building which houses offices, units and retail spaces over 12 floors featuring a gothic style tower, black marble, elaborate mosaics, ceramics and stone. Finally, don’t forget to pay a visit to the heritage listed Paul Smith building which features a detailed red brick façade, gothic stained glass windows and much of its original interiors.

Catch a theatre show

A visit to this end of town is not complete without a visit to the bright lights of the theatre district. Book a show at the Athanaeum Theatre to experience Melbourne’s oldest cultural institution, or take in a show at the Regent Theatre – which is a prized example of extravagant rococo inspired interiors.

Fabulous dining

If you’re looking for tasty eats then you’ll be spoilt for choice in this area. From hugely popular Mexican restaurant Mamasita, to sweeping views at No.35, Italian Fare at Il Solito Posto, French fare at Bistrot d’Orsay or modern Vietnamese at Uncle Collins Street, you’ll be sure to find something that will satisfy your taste buds.

Treat yourself to high tea

After a morning of shopping, stop and refuel with a classic high tea. There’s a myriad of options including the Hopetoun Tea Rooms in the Block Arcade, Collins Kitchen at the Grand Hyatt Melbourne, Royal St Collins in the St. Collins Lane shopping centre, Seasonal High Tea at The Westin Melbourne, and Afternoon Tea at the Hotel Windsor.

No matter what you are looking for, the Paris end of Collins Street is sure to fulfill all your shopping, cultural or culinary desires.
